Aboriginal Art Workshop for kids... that's original!

As some of you know, i like Australian aboriginal art. Australian Aboriginal people are part of a 40.000 years old culture that produces beautiful contemporary art pieces.This art combines traditions, beliefs and such a deep modernity. Look at the success of the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris (France)!
Many years ago, i had the opportunity to write about ReDot Fine Art Gallery and i am quite proud to introduce some fun activities for kids this week.

Red Dot Fine Art Gallery organizes on Saturday 11 February an offbeat workshop for kids with storytelling and painting.

With this aboriginal art workshop, your child will learn about some of the traditional symbols used by generations for survival in the harsh Australian deserts.

They will have the chance to create their own ‘Aboriginal Inspired’ art piece during a fun-filled workshop. After his first workshop, my first son was so happy to present his art piece!
Some are learning about Cubism, Impressionists..., why not to teach them other techniques based on natural pigments and fabrics and based on different values and identity?

· Age: 4 years and older

The Chinese Calendar is based on five cycles of 12 years each. Each cycle is tempered by one of the five Chinese elements - Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. And the year 2012 is that of the Water Dragon.

For Chinese people, the legendary Dragon is not the animal of the evil. In the east, this is an intelligent, flamboyant and magnanimous animal. (depicted above and below on this new set of stamps)

Remember Elliott the Dragon! It was such a kind dragon!

In conjunction with the Year of the Dragon, the Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) is proud to present 'Imagine Dragons' exhibition, dedicated to the youngest one (from 4 to 10 years).

Dragons are imaginary creatures. Dragon legends appear in every continent in the world. In the east, Dragons help people and are respected.

This is an interactive exhibition, well-done and absolutely perfect for our little ones!
You and your kids will learn that the Chinese "long" is the most common dragon in Singapore.

I like! The Dragon Boat.
Kids can sit inside a replica of a 'dragon boat' with an original dragon head on loan from Singapore Dragon Boat Association. Dragon boat racing began in China more than 2,000 years ago and is now an international sport.

We met at the Jimmy Monkey Café,where I had a smooth double espresso after a tough night feeding my little boy.

Kelvin, a lawyer by training, ismarried and has a 16 month-old daughter, Sophie. He is also a wonderfulphotographer. His sense of aesthetics and beauty, and his sensitivity andsimplicity of vision is something worth sharing about!

His digital camera, a Nikon D3,is like a best friend, as a diary or journal is to a writer. His maininspiration is people, and the images are his thoughts on paper.

Since a young age, Kelvin has hada passion for photography, experimenting with his father’s old school camera. Laterin life, he had the chance to live in vibrant Sydney for a number of years workingas a lawyer. It was during the time abroad that he got serious with hisphotography. The charm of Sydney inspired him to improve his photography sothat he could capture the beauty of his surroundings. He enrolled into formal photographyclasses and attended workshops. Upon moving home to Singapore, he understudiedone of Singapore’s leading commercial photographers as apprentice photographerfor almost 2 years, further honing his photography skills. In early 2011,Kelvin established mofy photos, whichis his very own photography gig.

Today, Kelvin’s photography mainlycentres around people, shooting family and children, weddings, portraitures, aswell as having been commissioned on commercial shoots for a Singapore university,a childrens’ fashion label and an artisan café. An essential part of his work isin children and family photography. Each family is special, and Kelvin seeks tocapture those precious relationships through his pictures.

Q: “How do you make a greatpicture?

A: I believe you take betterphotographs when you embrace life and are genuinely interested in seeking outthe beauty in people, children, families and things around you. The camera ismerely a tool through which you express those feelings. I try to stay curiousand excited about life, people and beautiful things, and hopefully, some ofthat shows through in my photographs.”

That is so true! A camera is toKelvin his vehicle of expression. He finds fulfilment in being able to expresshimself: as a lawyer, he uses words and language, and as a photographer, heuses visuals. His photos are universal and authentic, often infused with prettydetails. He prefers to keep them clean and simple, employing minimal post-processing.They are not just some snapshots, but an expression of how he sees things. Andthat is his asset!

Q: “What about working withkids…

A: Photographing kids is hardwork. Children are unpredictable. If they don’t feel like it, they won’t staystill for even 1 second or smile or do a curtsey. They don’t care about makinga beautiful family album. They just want to do what’s fun. When they are tired,they will run away or fuss or cry.

With a lot of patience, and agood understanding of what makes them tick, photographing kids can be veryrewarding. Simply, children are adorable, innocent, and full of life. Becausetheir emotions - chuckles, giggles and looks of wonderment - are not rehearsed,but come from within, they make compelling photos. And because kids grow up sofast, their pictures are precious as they record a split second of their lives,never to be replayed again.

Working well with kids comeswith a lot of practice, experience and being quick on your feet. I have a good teacher– my own daughter, my muse and favourite model – to teach me about children andhow to take good pictures of them. When photographing kids, it’s important todevelop a bond with the child right from the start. So, I try to begin anysession without the camera, and just spend time with the kids, making themlaugh, breaking the ice and earning their trust. Sometimes, you have to be a chimpanzee(jumping about, scratching your belly and making monkey noises), other timesyou have to roll in the sand or race them to the sea or let them cling onto youlike a big tree whilst the shoot is ongoing. Most of all, you need to love kids,and love being with them!”

Kokois a small boy who lives in a kampong by the river. Life is quiet andpeaceful until one day a tree comes to life as the menacing Green Giant! Can Koko the Great save the day?

KokoThe Great is the second title (a year after the release of Salted Fish_see post: Beautiful books_Jan 2011) in the "DreamingArt" Series where important works by Asian artists are the inspiration for originaland new children’s illustrated stories.

Koko’s story was inspired by firstgeneration Singaporean artist Liu Kang’s oil painting Life By The River. The work is in the national collection.

About the author

Natalie Hennedige is the ArtisticDirector of Cake Theatrical Productions. In 2007 Natalie was the recipient ofthe Young Artist Award by Singapore’s National Arts Council and the JCCISingapore Foundation Culture Award in 2010. Michel et Augustin (Michel and Augustin) may be unknown for some of you but for the happy few who are going to France (and may shop at Monoprix), this name sounds like simple little pleasures after school, after work... honestly, anytime of the day!
Michel et Augustin sounds like sweet and salt, sounds like "yummy, yummy".
The great thing is that Michel et Augustin is now available in Singapore!

A couple of words about Michel et Augustin's crazy adventure:

First ingredient: 2 crazy French guys with a twist of creativity and innovative spirit!

Second ingredient: A wonderful team staying at the Banana Plantation*.
The dream: to make the planet smile.
How? In concocting tasty and healthy products, based on natural ingredients of best quality.

Their adventure:

1989: In the back of a classroom and by a stroke of luck, Caliph Michel (the only one in that school) was seated next to Vizir Augustin (who also was the only one there).

2003: Michel and Augustin traveled the streets of Paris to visit the 1263 bakeries of the capital. They tasted 1432 baguettes and 432 pains au chocolat.

The results are fascinating! They wrote a Guidebook of Parisien Bakeries, published by the Editions de l'If.

8th January 2005: The first little round and good biscuits are sold to a customer between 6:32 pm and 6:41 at Salah's deli.

23rd, february 2005: Heavy rain in the rue Caulaincourt (Paris). Nevermind!
They started door-to-door selling to convert nice shopkeepers to the little round and good biscuits. A few passers-bys even thought they were a pair of Jehovah's witnesses...

May 2008: What about a trip to the countryside to meet the cow itself? And guess what?

Very quickly there was 7 cows in the creative meadow.

Summer 2008: a short trip to the orchards, and presto, a sudden craving for fresh mixed fruits all year long: pear, strawberry, then mango-passion fruit, and raspberry-apple.

October 2009: the cow was intoxicated by its success and fell into a jar. 3 new secret recipes: plain and very good, strawberry-blueberry and vanilla from Madagascar.

3rd of June 2010: the 1st Cow Bar of the world sets up in Paris.

Created in June 2010 by Catherine Seixo, architect and designer in Bordeaux, the Bbk brand illustrates a single universe dedicated to the child, inspired by the childish mode of the beginning of century and the decorative arts of the Thirties.

A style with the traditional elegance, which associates sober and refined forms and fabrics of quality selected for the solidity and the nobility of the matters, the screens and the reasons: silks, wool and cotton velvet, cashmeres, poplins, flaxes and cottons natural for each season.

I also like Bbk Creations as each collection is designed and carried out in the great tradition French dressmaker: comfortable and smart cuts, an assembly and neat completions. Clothing has wise gallons, old embroideries and accessories of great quality (closings, buttons…). S U P E R M A M A... this Singaporean offbeat retail store I discovered a couple of days ago. Founded by a inspiring young Singaporean couple, parents of two adorable children, S U P E R M A M A is a retail gallery that collects, creates and curates things that stir their thoughts and imagination!...

At S U P E R M A M A, the concept is: "Grow younger and older at the same time"!

Location is opposite Raffles Hotel, on Seah St. inside a old shophouse... It looks so retro to go upstairs, you feel like in the Mood For Love movie! Have a look!

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Water.

I am currently pregnant of the third little one (almost 25 weeks already!), and drinking everyday a pure water is a real concern for me and ALSO for you, mums-to-be and young mummies!
Water plays an essential role in the life of pregnant women, young mothers and babies.

It is therefore essential for you and your baby to choose the water that is the best adapted to all your needs. Throughout pregnancy water plays a vital role. On average, it represents 60% of your weight, and is completely renewed every 7 weeks, primarily through the water you drink.

In addition, this water contributes to the formation and renewal of the amniotic fluid, the environment in which your baby develops and lives for the first nine months of life. At 25 weeks, the foetus itself is nearly 90% water. The quality of water you drink is therefore crucial both for your own health and your baby’s.

Water continues to play a key role in your baby’s development even after birth. For the first several months, babies’ sole source of nutrition is either breast milk or formula. And in both cases, the primary ingredient is water.

In fact, 87% of breast milk is water, the water you drink. This water must be of natural purity, consistency and unique balance. A few weeks ago, I talked to you about the Art Garden at S.A.M. (aka Singapore Art Museum).

Little Y & V recently visited the exhibition and when they came back home, they were absolutely enthusiastic! Only 4 years old and already full of excitment and inspiration!

Could you imagine the little girl and the little boy, browsing galleries, something like 3 hours, only inside the museum, playing with trains, creating and modeling their own 3D paper fruit thanks to the Thai artist Wit Pimkamchanapong, and so and so...

Building on the success of its inaugural edition in 2010, this year’s Art Garden

not only presents a greater number of local commissions, it is also bigger with local and

international artists presenting a total of ten creative works. This is the only exhibition in

Singapore that showcases engaging art works suitable for children.

The works of Japanese artist-duo Paramodel often reflect their name which is

inspired by the words “paradise” and “model”. Using modular toy train tracks to fill

the gallery, the Paramodel city shows the artists’ reconstruction of city life in a

way that is both meticulous and whimsical.

Paramodelic-Graffiti can be seen as

an exploration of urban geography and city topography that organises our daily

lives, as well as a creative process of making spontaneous patterns through

uniform components. The work-in-progress element of art-making is an important

aspect to the artists’ practice, and entering the gallery space while Paramodel

are working, can be akin to walking into a construction site where the artists play

foremen.

The symbol of the rabbit has frequently appeared in the myths and customs in

many cultures around the world. Singapore artist Dawn Ng’s fascination with this

adorable creature has resulted in her creation of

Walter, a curious colossal bunny. Ng calls Walter a “guerrilla style pop-up installation” which appears in

various places in Singapore.

A special selection of animated films sourced from all over the world can also be

screened at Art Garden.

Suitable for all ages.

BAFTA and Academy Award-winning works such as Lost and Found by Philip Hunt, which is based on a book by Oliver Jeffers, and The Lost Thing by Andrew Ruhemann and Shaun Tan, and two films, Flats and Slip, by local animation studio Scrawl Studios.

Y & V were very responsive to such works as they stimulate curiosity and invited them to explore and see things differently.

Do you know the red dot museum?

The second red dot design museum in the world was established in Singapore in November 2005. The museum is the anchor tenant and key attraction at the red dot traffic, a creative hub located at Maxwell Road, the former Singapore traffic Police Headquarters.

Like Design Zentrum, the red dot design museum in Singapore is the physical embodiment of the red dot design awards, an exclusive exhibition venue for red dot design award winners. It is here that products and brands communicate their design excellence. It also provides important orientation to businesses, design professionals consumers on what or who has the best design.

What is the red dot award?

This design concept is a barometer of the future. The competition distinguishes truly creative achievements and thus pays tribute to the high potential of creative talents, designers and design companies around the world.

At the museum in Singapore, there are more than 200 award winning futuristic design concepts from the most talented designers and innovative companies. Many of these ideas may one day be made available to us, improving our life and even change the world as we know it.

These 3 concepts I would like to introduce you today (see below) have only a pictorial representation as they are concepts, they have not yet been made into actual products.

Each concept ignites their creativity and their imagination. Just for kids!

The Big Mouth - Storage Chairs for Kids

Short description:

With a funnel on one side leading to a drawer on the other, The Big Mouth – Storage Chairs for Kids have been designed to comically resemble big open mouths. The funnel is a conduit for the collection of toys that are stored beneath the seat.

The Big Mouth - Storage Chairs for Kids won a red dot at the red dot award: design concept 2010 designed by Professor Jian ZHANG from China.

Natural Energy Park

Short Description:

Natural Energy Park is an experiential learning playground that encourages children to realise the importance of global resources and understand the possibilities of renewable energy. Play actions such as pedalling and turning are converted into energy that activates different parts of the playground.

Natural Energy Park won a red dot: best of the best at the red dot award: design concept 2010 designed by Hyundai Engineering & Construction from South Korea

Block Mold

Block Mold is a mould set that facilitates the making of toy building blocks with recycled paper.
Block Mold is a set of mould trays that enables the creation of toy building blocks at home. The production process is cost-free, as the raw material used to make the blocks is homemade recycled paper pulp.
Block Mold allows children and their parents to interact with a learning and playing experience.
Block Mold enables children to arrange and design the combination of the molds to produce their preferred block shapes. As such, they can customise the building blocks for their imaginary world.

The pulp can be made by tearing up recycled paper into small pieces, soaking the pieces in water, and then either rubbing them by hand or churning them in a blender. Once the pulp is placed in the moulds, it takes two days to solidify.
Block Mold can also be used as a teaching tool in school, as it helps to make lessons more interesting. Furthermore, students can learn to communicate and to cooperate with one another. Putting discarded paper to good use, Block Mold could be a solution to excessive plastic toy wastage.

Art Garden: Children's Season at SAM

The well-loved Children's Season returns to SAM this June with a selection of artworks chosen for their imagination and interactivity.

The Dancing Solar Flowers installation by French artist Alexandre Dang offers a warm welcome to children and families and introduces the potential of environmental friendly technology. Shop at our lively paper fruit market by Thai artist Wit Pimkanchanapong, and look out for the return of Walter, the curious colossal bunny by Singapore artist Dawn Ng.

Don't miss Knee Deep, an amazing interactive installation developed by British and American artists, Theodore Watson with Emily Gobeille that invites children to jump in and explore unexpected worlds of different proportions with their feet.

The founder: When Swedish born Kristina “Kikki” Karlsson decided to set up a home office almost ten years ago, she couldn’t have known where that decision would take her.
